Your BBB® is here to help you save money on energy this winter. After rent/mortgage and groceries, utilities are the biggest monthly expense, so here is what you can do to keep warm while cutting the costs:

1. Open the curtains in your house

Most people have blackout curtains in their homes. Opening them will rise your house’s temperature by one degree. Lowering your thermostat by that degree alone will save you $10 a month!

2. Choose big rugs

Whether you have laminate, hardwood floors or even carpet, big area rugs will keep the heat from escaping through the floor.

3. Layer up!

If you feel like it’s cold in the house, put on a couple of thin layers (tops, tank tops, blouses), add a scarf and even a vest if you are in and out of the house for a longer period of time.

4. Use your ceiling fan

You can use the ceiling fan to change the airflow in your house: counter-clockwise will rise the heat to the ceiling, while clockwise will trap it under, keeping you and your family warm.

5. Adjust your thermostat at night

According to the US Department of Energy, you can cut 10% of your yearly costs by turning down the thermostat 10 to 15 degrees for 8 hours. To keep warm at night, buy flannel sheets and a warm comforter!
