Some 2,000 years ago, the Dragon Boat races began to honor the memory of ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan. According to legend, the people of Chu, who love Yuan, rushed to the river to rescue him and they rowed boats and they beat drums to scare away the fish. Now, this tradition continues around the world, and for the fourth year, the Owensboro Dragon Boat Festival is ready to row.

The 2014 Owensboro Dragon Boat Festival is this Saturday, August 23 at English Park, and it begins with the Opening Ceremonies at 8:30 am. 19 teams will begin competing not long after. So, what is a race like? Here's a clip from last year's event:

For those of you not racing, there will be live cultural entertainment throughout the day, and there will be plenty of activities i.e. playground, inflatables, arts and crafts to keep the kiddos entertained.

Best of all, the Owensboro Dragon Boat Festival is free!
