Atmos Energy Corporation is joining utilities nationwide this coming Monday, August 11, to recognize National 811 Day. This day serves as a reminder to all homeowners, construction crews, and do-it-yourself folks to observe safe digging practices by always calling 811 before you dig.

By calling 811, homeowners and contractors are connected to their local one-call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of their intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the site of the dig to mark the locations of underground utility owned lines with flags and spray paint, free of charge. The greatest risk to digging without calling 811 first is accidentally damaging underground natural gas lines. Even minor damages such as a gouge, scrape, or dent, or crease to a pipeline or its coating, may cause a leak or failure.

The law requires that all excavators call 811 between two and ten days before digging begins on public or private property. Whether you are installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree, or pouring concrete, you must call 811 prior to excavation.
