If you listen to the WBKR morning show, you know that I try to stay as healthy as possible.  I work out virtually every day.  I also do crazy things like bike 300 miles from Memphis to Owensboro. Twice, I have run fifty miles on a treadmill in one day.  I have participated in 26 consecutive 30-minute boot camp classes without taking a break.

I am a firm believer that staying active makes you feel younger and my goal is to feel (and look) young and fit for as long as possible.  Well, I just found a new way to do it.  Be Real Sports on Hwy 54 in Owensboro recently opened a fitness studio.

Here are five things that you will absolutely love about it.

#1- Zwift Indoor Cycling

This is really cool.  If you've been watching television in the last couple of months or so, you likely have seen commercials for an in-home cycling company that allows you to ride with cyclists from all around the world.  Be Real Sports Fitness Center has the same capabilities!  And, the best part, you can experience that ride on a huge projection screen.

For instance, on my first ride, I sped through Central Park in New York City.  Heck, I got married in Central Park so I decided to take a virtual trip back there and cycle through it.  It was scenic, challenging and I managed to get some "high fives" from fellow cyclists who were joining in from all over the world- Italy, Germany, Belgium and more.  This is so freaking cool and I am pumped we have this available in Owensboro.

#2-The FREE Wednesday Indoor Social Ride

Each Wednesday night, Be Real Sports Fitness Studio hosts an Indoor Social Ride for cyclists.  You can bring your own bike (stationary, of course).  Or you can take advantage of one of the five trainers Be Real Sports has on site.

You can reserve one in advance and just bring your bike to snap into it.  This is a great way to ride with your friends and other avid cyclists in an indoor setting.  Of course, the big screen will allow you to cycle virtually anywhere in the world!

#3-Yoga

Okay, it's no secret.  I have the flexibility of a 2 x 4.  But Be Real Sports Fitness Studio offers a variety of yoga classes, which are perfect for flexibility and core.  Here are the times the classes are offered:

  • Monday and Wednesdays at 5:30am and 10am.
  • Monday, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5:30pm.
  • Saturdays at 10am and 1pm.

And here's an added bonus and cool feature of the yoga classes.  As with Zwift training, Be Real Sports uses their giant projection screen to take you to different exotic and peaceful locations around the world.  I mean, who wouldn't want do a Downward Facing Dog in a rain forest??

Plus, the prices are great and no monthly membership is required.  For example- yoga classes are $15 per person.  Plus, there are options that allow you to save money.  You can buy a 5-pack for $60, a 10-pack for $100 or you can buy unlimited classes for just $80 per month.

#4- Personal Training and "Project You"

Be Real Sports Fitness Studio offers one-on-one personal training.  Larry Myles, the owner of the studio, is very proud to announce the "Project You" initiative.  And that's the focus of Be Real's training regiment.  It's all about YOU!  They will tailor your program based on your wants and needs.

For instance, if you're looking to lose weight, they will train you accordingly.  If you're looking to recover from an injury, they can assist you with strengthening the problem area in question.  If you're looking to train for endurance event, the folks at Be Real Sports are experts.  They know how to train for endurance and they can help you do the same.

#5- Be Real Sports Fitness Studio is a "boutique" studio

According to owner Larry Myles, boutique studios are one of the fastest-growing trends in the fitness industry.  They have been popular in major metropolitan areas like New York City and Los Angeles and they've now started popping up in smaller cities like Owensboro.  According to LifeFitness.com, boutique studios are "generally viewed as a small gym that focuses on group exercise in one or two fitness areas."  As you can see, Be Real Sports certainly fits the bill — with an emphasis on yoga and indoor cycling, with small class sizes, and intimate, intense and fun workouts.

I asked Larry Myles how the name Be Real Sports came to be.  His answer was quite simple.  It basically grew from his years of fitness and accountability coaching.  He challenges you by setting the workouts and putting you in charge of earning the results those workouts can provide.  If your results are falling short, he'll challenge you to "be real" and honestly assess why.

Trust me!  I have been a runner who's run alone. I have worked out . . . alone.  There's no better setting for a workout than being surrounded by folks trying to achieve the same results as you.  That's exactly what Be Real Sports Fitness Studio provides.  And it provides REAL results.
