The crackdown on pesky telemarketers is building steam in Kentucky. A bill has been pre-filed to ban the practice of spoofing.

House Majority Whip and Representative Kevin Bratcher of Louisville said in his talks with constituents, the phony numbers and misleading telemarketers were the one issue he always hears about.

Spoofing is when you get a call from a number that very similar to your own. The bill would require telemarketers to use their real numbers of origin. Scams have also motivated the bill.

The bill would also ban robocalls. A first-time penalty would be $500 and additional offenses would be $3,000.

The Kentucky legislature will consider BR 313 when they reconvene in Frankfort on January 8.
