21 students from Sandy Hook Elementary School have joined singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson in a performance of the timeless classic "Over the Rainbow."
I have been trying to get her to take the plunge for years! And now, finally, Kizzy has agreed to help WBKR raise money for Special Olympics Kentucky by taking the 2013 Polar Bear Plunge! It's Saturday, February 9th at The Hines Center in Philpot and, as Kizzy explains, it's going to be COLD!! Listen . . .
Six local non-profit organizations are coming together in celebration of March being Disability Awareness Month with an awesome event here in Owensboro. Puzzle Pieces, Wendell Foster’s Campus for Developmental Disabilities, Dream Riders of Kentucky, Team Karlie, Two Rivers Buddy Ball and Green River Area Down Syndrome Association are collaborating together to host a Color Blast 5K (walk/run) in English Park to honor individuals who have unique qualities and abilities.
I have been wanting to participate in a run like this for a while and can't wait to join in the fun on Saturday, March 23rd! You should come out too!
It's back! Denim and Diamonds, our annual concert fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, is 7pm, Friday, February 1st at the Theatre Workshop Opryhouse. And this year's line-up in sensational. Check it out and get your tickets NOW!
We are very lucky to have the International Bluegrass Music Museum here in Owensboro! Most of us know that they bring us ROMP every year, but we don't know much more.
Well, here are just a few things going on within the next month or so, check it out!
I have said it multiple times before . . . jumping into a freezing-cold lake is the single WORST idea in history and the single-worst way to raise money for a charity. LOL! But, you know what! We're doing it anyway and we are going to have a blast. :) The 2013 Polar Bear Plunge is coming up Saturday, February 9th at The Hines Center in Owensboro and we are truly going to be "freezin' for a reason." All proceeds from the Plunge benefit Special Olympics Kentucky. Wanna know how crazy this event is? Check out video from last year's Plunge when Jaclyn, Erin Grant and I took it with a couple of brave WBKR listeners!
A beauty queen with ties to Owensboro has been busy this holiday season proving that giving is so much more important than receiving. Korin Cross, an OHS graduate, U of L freshman and the reigning Miss Kentucky Teen Cover Girl Queen, has established a non-profit organization to benefit the victims of the recent school shooting in Connecticut. This morning, she braved the snow to visit The WBKR Waking Crew and share her inspiration for "Something to Remember" and her vision of what she wants the charity to accomplish. Take a listen!
I think it's safe to say that people all over the country were extremely touched by the life of Lane Goodwin. We all watched he and his family fight the monster of childhood cancer. We celebrated during the good days and our hearts were broken when he passed away in October.
In lieu of flowers or a balloon release, the family requested sentiments be in the form of gift cards to certain stores. They planned to purchase toys for the children being treated at the Vanderbilt Children's Oncology Clinic. A few weeks ago... that's just what they did!
Mrs. Davis' 5th grade class at East View Elementary decided to do things a little differently this year. Instead of giving presents to each other, they wanted to donate them to the children at Christmas Wish. What a great group of 10 and 11 year olds! Office Manager Roxianne's daughter Cydney is in the class, so we decided to take the WBKR truck, the BKR bear and us to the school and have them present their presents!
These kids are amazing and they brought in over 35 toys! They even wrapped the gifts themselves, check it out!
American Red Cross of Western Kentucky will be holding an event this Friday, December 14th (9:00am - 6:00pm) at Towne Square Mall. The event is to promote volunteering, preparedness and to give people an opportunity to donate as well.
I can't believe I'm saying this so early in the month, but we are right at 1,000 letters! Wow! There is SO much need right now in the Tri-State and we are relying on YOU to help us make sure that every child in our area has something under the tree Christmas morning. You always come thru for us every year and I have no doubts that you will help us out now!
Here's an example of another letter we have received...
