Sunday’s Indy 500 Will Be Missing Two Familiar Faces

Sunday's Indianapolis 500 won't be the same for a couple of reasons. Last year's winner, Dan Wheldon, tragically died last October as the result of a collision in a race in Las Vegas. Howdy NASCAR fans! Blake Smith here. It’s time to pull out your spurs and cowboy hats. NASCAR is headed to Texas for this weekend’s Samsung Mobile 500. This weekend’s event will be the first points event of the season that will be held under the lights.

This will mark the 23rd visit that NASCAR’s elite touring series has made to the 1.5 mile oval, just outside of Fort Worth. Only 4 drivers have competed in all 22 events thus far. This short list of drivers includes the inaugural race winner, Jeff Burton. The 3 other drivers are Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin and Texas native, Bobby Labonte.

Race Talk Returns to WBKR Tuesday Night — NASCAR is off this Weekend

After 6 weeks on the road, NASCAR teams will be enoying their first off-weekend of the season. This first break in the action is much welcomed by the touring series. Drivers’ off weekend plans vary from a trip to the Bahamas to enjoying some time behind the wheel of a Sprint car.

The first 6 races have proved to be an exciting start to the 2012 Sprint Cup series season. The Stewart-Hass teams of Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman have won half of the series’ events, thus far. During the first 6 events of the year, there have been 1,925 laps completed. The only drivers to have completed them all are Dale Earnhardt Jr, Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr.

The drivers of the NASCAR Sprint Cup series will visit one of the series’ oldest venues, Martinsville Speedway. Martinsville has hosted NASCAR’s elite series since the inception of the series in 1949. At .526 miles, Martinsville Speedway is the shortest track on the circuit. Martinsville Speedway can be best described as 2 long drag-strips connected by 2 sharp turns. Some drivers compare the driving style at Martinsville to the style and finesse a driver uses at a road course.

-- Blake SmithWhile NASCAR’s top series were in "Sin City" over the weekend, Dodge unveiled their 2013 Dodge Charger for the Sprint Cup Series. The Dodge brand re-entered NASCAR’s top series in 2001, after a thirty year absence from NASCAR. The Mopar initiative was led by team owner and legendary crew chief, Ray Evernham. The brand entered 2001’s Daytona 500 with 10 entries, none of which are currently aligned with the Dodge brand. Entering the 2012 Daytona 500, where were 3 Dodge Chargers. These cars were the 2 of Penske Racing and the single car team of Robby Gordon.
