On Tuesday, I headed down to Nashville to broadcast live at The Grand Ole Opry. It was a really special day at the Opry! A star-studded line-up had gathered for George Jones' 80th birthday concert celebration. The Oak Ridge Boys were there, Jamey Johnson, Alan Jackson, Pam Tillis and more were on hand to pay tribute to The Possum and I got the pleasure of listening to some of the rehearsal performances. It was REALLY cool! But, let's cut the small talk and get down to the business at hand! Not only did I get to be backstage at The Opry, I got to head over to the OPRY BACKSTAGE GRILL and stuff my big ole face. And, yes, I had a camera to capture every delicious bite!!
When I get the chance, I try to plan my vacations around a very special goal I created for myself many years ago. That goal is to visit every state in the union. I made this decision after visiting California with my family as a teen. At the time, California seemed to be a mythical place where few people like me ever got to go. Hey, I was 14. So I thought, “If I can go to California, why not everywhere else?” And this year, I got to add a few more slices of “everywhere else” to my very own American pie.
I wrote earlier this week about the history of Holiday World, today marks the theme parks 65th Anniversary and also marks another piece of history. The "Mammoth" The World's Longest Water Coaster will open next May at Holiday World Splashin' Safari costing a whopping 9 million dollars to build! It's the largest single-ride investment in Holiday World's history its so big their calling it "Mammoth"
This weekend I was watching a documentary about Santa Claus Land/Holiday World. I had no idea it first opened 65 years ago in 1946, The world's 1st theme park (pre-dating Disneyland by 18 years). I remember when I was a kid Splashin' Safari didn't even exist at Holiday World, Splashin' Safari came along in 1993.
Last year, Jimmy Wayne was a world-beater--or, at the very least, a nation beater--as he walked a 1700-mile journey to raise awareness of the issue of foster children who age out of the foster care program and may become homeless. He began on January 1, 2010 in Nashville and finished in Phoenix. Jimmy, himself, spent a great deal of time as a young man in foster care. And now, that pilgrimage will be the focus of a new documentary.
Always love to hear feedback from our WBKR listeners about what they may or may not like in their household, this time lets talk about television shows. I'd have to say "Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe i
I have been in Mexico many times but have never stayed for a prelonged period. When I used to live in San Diego all my visiting friends would want to head south of the border to Tijuana. Now, if you've never been there, picture this. Dirt, sweat, the smell of roasting pig, taxi cab drivers who drive like maniacs, people trying to sell you everything from blankets to sombreros to Chicklets, and bar owners screaming "Free margaritas for the ladies!!" It's awful! Thankfully, other parts of Mexico, like Cancun (where I was last week) are BEAUTIFUL! And I spent 8 days and 7 nights in a coastal paradise called LIVE AQUA!
Hopefully, the woes of the weary trucker won't be exacerbated too much now that heavy truck traffic has been re-routed around downtown Owensboro. It has become necessary to have the three-plus axle haulers or the 40,000 pounders--if not one in the same-- removed from the complicated Second Street equation. Even during the most minimal traffic situations, downtown Owensboro is kind of a nightmare while the Riverfront Crossing project continues at Second and St. Ann.
It was another awesome live broadcast from the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. I usually get to do two a year--one in the summer, one around Christmas time. Last summer, the hotel was still recovering and rebuilding from the flood that devastating much of Nashville in May 2010. I was able to return last November and this past Thursday I was joined on the air by the director of public relations for Gaylord Opryland, Jenny Barker along with marketing and PR coordinator Rob Regg. They shared all the scoop about Country Music Summer at Gaylord...and a sneak peek at what we can look forward to this Christmas.
I've done a lot of traveling in the past two weeks most especially to portions of Indiana that I've passed through but never really stopped in for a walk and a talk. Luckily the RC Cola Challenge has opened up an opportunity for me to not just pass through but stop in and visit too.
