Hurricane Irene and Owensboro Tornado Seem More Frightening From Afar

Now that the east coast has, thankfully, said, “Good night, Irene,” I’d like to toss in my two cents regarding a comparison between the hurricane and our very own beloved 2000 tornado. First, I can’t speak for any of those who were affected by Hurricane Irene, nor would I make that attempt. But after seeing a photo of Irene from space, I thought, “That’s what I would have liked to have seen eleven years ago when the tornado ripped through.”

How Cool Is This? Heat Relief Shelters Are Open

I was talking earlier with News25 Chief Meteorologist Wayne Hart and he mentioned that while we will continue to experience excessive heat at least through this weekend, we likely won't be seeing anything like the 126 degree heat index we had last week. It's just that this heat wave is lasting longer. So we will all be seeking ways in which keep cool. Steve Horn gave us some good ideas for the indoors. But some of us have to be outdoors. And there are those of us who may not be able to keep our homes as comfortable as we'd like. Thank goodness, then, for relief shelters.

Dave Spencer Longs for the Those Lazy, Hazy Days of Winter

The sun is closer to the earth in the winter than in the summer. That statement tempts me, ever so greatly, to say "Hah! I don't believe it!" Except that it is true. But, seriously, you could have fooled me! This is ridiculous, my friends. Utterly ridiculous. I was watching a forecast recently on one of the 24-hour news channels, and its resident chief meteorologist said that the type of heat we are getting is usually reserved for tropical locations, you know, like the Equator!  That's odd, because I honestly don't remember the move!

Something is Fishy in The Neighborhood- Dead Fish and Questions Rise to the Surface

You may have heard about some of the reports of large fish die offs in the Ohio River and surrounding areas or, like me, you may have seen them for yourself. The gossip around the neighborhood this morning was all about the smell. Taking out the trash has taken on an all new aroma in my neighborhood.

The Worst Storms I Remember – Dave Spencer’s Top Five

I don’t remember very many really bad storms as a child. We’d have tornado warnings and the sirens would sound. That would frighten the life out of me, but then we’d head over to my grandmother’s house and go down into her basement and then nothing would materialize. And when I was kid, I LOVED snowstorms. But I’m all grown up now. And I have grown-up attitudes about some of these nasty storms. In a nutshell, I’m not a fan. Here now are the worst storms I can remember:

At WBKR, We Fry Eggs the Old Fashioned Way…on the Asphalt [VIDEO]

Okay, so the old expression goes something like this, "Why it's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk." We decided to go with asphalt. It's black and bound to be hotter. And yesterday--Tuesday, July 12th, 2011--the heat index reached 124 degrees. Somebody get the egg timer!
