When Coach John Calipari arrived at the University of Kentucky, he hit the ground running. He brought with him a monster recruiting class, sure.

But it was his ability to tap his vast resources and raise $1 million for victims of the Haiti earthquake in 2010 that affected the most people and revealed what a humanitarian the coach is.

And, now he has nearly done it again.

Ahead of UK's game against Maryland Friday night in Brooklyn, Coach Cal and the 'Cats manned phones and took pledges over the course of two telethons to raise money for those in the New York/New Jersey area who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Cal will present the check just before the first ever doubleheader at Brooklyn's all-new Barclays Center is to commence.

The coach has many friends in the area and feels it his duty to teach these kids the importance of doing for others. Coach Cal has always gone above and beyond the call of duty to not only mold a group of young guys into a great basketball team but to instill a since of self-worth in each young man who comes to play for him, wherever he has been.

The new-look Kentucky Wildcats will officially kick off the 2012-2013 campaign Friday night at 7:30 against the University of Maryland. We'll carry all the action live on The Country Station 92.5 WBKR and on our sister station AM1490 WOMI.
