Elvis Week in Memphis Today — He Died 34 Years Ago Today

Today in Memphis, Tennessee, ElvisPresley fans from all over the world to gather and remember "the King" (of Rock and Roll) during Elvis week.

I have always thought the anniversary of his death was an odd time to celebrate, rather than say his birthday, which is January 8. Oh, that explains it -- January versus August. I also think the original vigil that occurred spontaneously in August of 1977 contributed to the eventual annual event.

I was celebrating my daughter Rene's 14th birthday when I got the call from WINN Radio in Louisville that Elvis had died.
