It’s that time of year for farmer’s markets and fresh fruits, and you can find stands just about everywhere you look.  I like that in the sense that people are all out together searching for the ripest tomatoes and sweetest peaches.  Could be that I love summer and I’m a farm girl.

I was excited when I was asked to work on the “Kentucky Made” topic because I’m a big fan of KY Proud and try to buy local KY Proud products when I can.  So let me, the Kentucky farm girl, take the chance to share why I think this is so neat now that we’re in Farmer’s Market season!

“Did you know the average meal travels 1,500 miles from the farm to your plate, resulting in lost nutritional value and taste every mile of the way? Buying Kentucky Proud products decreases this distance and ensures that you’re eating fresh and nutritious foods while supporting Kentucky’s farm families.”  -www.kyproud.com

In Owensboro/Daviess County there are more KY proud business/producers than I could begin to name in this post.  Everything from daylilies to wineries as well as including Reid’s Orchard and the Western KY Botanical Gardens.  The KY Proud website (through the Department of Agriculture) lets you see where/what types of businesses are in your county.
