It’s always sad news to hear about puppy mills. If you aren’t familiar with the term, it’s an operation of dogs (usually small breeds) who are used exclusively to breed for puppy sales. Many times, the dogs are kept their entire lives in small confinements and sadly, deplorable conditions. We are happy to report that two puppy mills have decided to close and the Warrick Humane Society has many very deserving dogs that need a home.

Owning a puppy mill dog isn’t always the easiest task. Most are not housebroken, are missing teeth, need medication or aren’t socialized. But, the payoff is that you are truly rescuing a helpless creature who has suffered torture throughout their life.

According to Lindsey Byers, WHS Executive Director, “This is a combined effort of WHS and Tri-State Yorkie Rescue.  Last week, we took in seven puppy mill dogs and this week we took 25 from two separate puppy mills choosing to shut down in Missouri.  Missouri laws are becoming stricter and instead of keeping their breeding up to code, they choose to shut down instead.  Last week’s rescue included a French Bulldog, Chihuahua’s, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and a Puggle.  Yesterday’s rescue included Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Chorkies, Maltese, and Poodles.  This is the fifth puppy mill that has shut down and we have taken dogs from.”

The show will run March 8^th-10^th in the DCHS auditorium. Performances on March 8^th and 9^th are at 7pm; the performance on the 10^th is at 2pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.  The show is directed by Candy Miller, with pit orchestra directed by DuWayne Dale, and the show is choreographed by WBKR’s own Chad Benefield!

It is a great show you are sure to enjoy. Plus it is a great way to support the arts in our schools. And if you are not familiar with the show, it is a nostalgic musical that was inspired by the publicity and response when Elvis Presley was drafted into the Army in 1957.

2/25/13 12:00 PM:

No threats found during search for person with a gun at Day School. Evansville Day School was placed on lockdown after a call was made to 911 saying there was a person in the school with a gun. There were no reports of shots being fired.

Officers from the Evansville Police Department and Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call and secured the campus. A sweep of the school was conducted and no threats were found.

The lockdown was lifted after officer determined the school was safe. An investigation is underway to determine why the initial call was made to 911. – Evansville Police Department

2/25/13 @ 11:32 AM Parents are picking up children from Evansville Day School. No word yet on an official statement from EPD.

2/25/13 @ 11:20 AM Officer said as of this point the phone call reporting the gun at the school & the bank robbery have not been connected.

2/25/13 @ 10:58 AM: Parents are being asked to gather at Integra Bank next door for updates.

2/25/13 @ 10:45 AM Police are telling parents that a caller tipped police of a gun threat. All children are locked in their classrooms and everyone in the building is safe. **This is not the official statement by the EPD at this time.

2/25/13 @ 10:33 AM – Officer reporting to dispatch that the school is secure, kids are all okay. They continue to search/investigate.

2/25/13 @ 10:30 AM: Currently Evansville Day School is on lock-down. According to Evansville Watch, a community Facebook page:

Mr. Banks  is know for his bikes, having built on for the Army, one for the Marines, as well as other great pieces of ride-able artwork. I was even lucky enough to get a few minutes with Mr. Banks to talk about why he built this bike for breast cancer awareness, and what got him into building bikes. Below is the interview I had with Mr. Banks, as well as some pictures from the event and his magnificent creation!

If you’ve never been, I highly recommend taking some time and checking it out! Admission to the museum is only $3.00 per person, ages two and under are FREE. The yearly memberships are very reasonable and I plan to get one for me and Carsyn. For children, there is SO much to see! But, it’s a great place for adults too.

The Owensboro Museum of Science and History offers a wide range of educational programming to school groups and other organizations. From the exciting SpeedZeum to the hands-on ENCOUNTER to the Wendell Ford Government Education Center, they have programs that will excite, entertain and educate. Diversity programs, leadership institutes and seminars, student forums and history and science based activities are just a few of the wonderful educational programs offered at the Owensboro Museum. There are always events at the museum including the Coal Mine Public Tour.

The museum can also be rented out for birthday parties and other events. You know me, I love shopping, no matter where I am, ha! The Owensboro Museum of Science and History’s museum store has so much to choose from! There are so many interesting and fun items available for purchase. In lieu of flowers or a balloon release, the family requested sentiments be in the form of gift cards to certain stores. They planned to purchase toys for the children being treated at the Vanderbilt Children’s Oncology Clinic. A few weeks ago… that’s just what they did! There were able to donate over $2600 worth of toys!

“Very emotional day yesterday as we went to Vandy to deliver the toys. It’s the 1st time I have been at the hospital since Lane came home on hospice. I didn’t know if I was going to make it in the front door but I pulled it together & we delivered the toys to the child life staff. Had another meltdown when I went in clinic & saw all the wonderful staff that had taken such good care of Lane & us the past 2 1/2 years. Vandy became our 2nd home. There was lots of tears & hugs but the end result will be that lots & lots of kiddo’s fighting this ” monster” will have smiles on their faces as they pick out toys.”

Casper “Cap” Gardner was Owensboro’s mayor from 1954 to 1958. In 2007, an award was initiated in his honor to recognize city employees for outstanding service to the community. And for each of these past six years, Ms. Gayle Gardner–Mayor Gardner’s widow–has presented the award.

Yesterday, WBKR received this press release from the Owensboro Police Department:

On December 4th, 2012 during the Owensboro Board of Commissioners meeting,
the City of Owensboro annual Cap Gardner award was presented to Sergeant
Jeff Roby of the Owensboro Police Department.

Casper “Cap” Gardner was the Mayor of Owensboro from 1954 to 1958. The
annual award named in his honor began in 2007 to recognize outstanding
service by a city employee. Ms. Gayle Gardner, widow of the former Mayor,
presented the award.

Sergeant Jeff Roby, a 14 year veteran with the Owensboro Police Department, is
the supervisor for the Street Crimes Unit. His nomination was a result of his
commitment to narcotics enforcement and his collaborative efforts with
community leaders to significantly reduce the impact of “K-2” among the youth
of our community. “K-2” is a synthetic drug designed to mimic the effects of
marijuana.

Yesterday was such a tough work day for me, haha! If you were listening to my Midday Show you know I was live from Allure Salon and Spa on Salem Drive in Owensboro. But I can tell from the photos that Lane is a very brave guy–braver, most likely, than many of us would be in a similar situation.

As more and more people got wind of Lane’s illness, something began to happen. A campaign began called “Thumbs Up for Lane.” The WBKR crew had a picture taken. Many others did as well.

Then I saw a thumbs up photo of David Nail. Then there was Trent Tomlinson, Justin Moore, Josh Turner, Josh Thompson, Kevin Durant, Kyle Busch, Coach John Calipari, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood…and the list continues to grow. In fact, the Thumbs Up campaign has reached as far as Spain, Rumania, and Afghanistan according to some of the picture I’ve seen on Facebook.

The outpouring of love and support is overwhelming and extraordinary. We’ve all sort of become extended family members of the Goodwin family. I’ve never seen so many different people connected by one cause like this.

Unbelievable.

My friend Danny Beeler at Heart of the City Design always takes AMAZING pictures of all of the big concerts around the Tri-State and I thought I’d give him some practice at taking pics of kids, ha!

We went downtown Owensboro to the beautiful Smothers Park and he passed the test! I LOVE these pics of my three-year-old Carsyn! Let me know what you think! And, as always, thanks for letting me share my sweet, sometimes not so sweet little girl!

My friend, Jim Parr, used to be a newsman for WVJS, WSTO and WBKR. Recently he’s been posting some phenomenal old newspaper ads from the Messenger-Inquirer on his Facebook page. Some bring back memories and some are before my time. But, all are endlessly fascinating.

So I sent him a message and asked his permission to post them on our website, as I’m sure there are those of you who would enjoy seeing them as well. He said yes and we are off and running.

Most of the images are ads, save one–a photo of the old W.T. Grant Department Store which was part of the Gabe’s Shopping Center. It was located where the Plasma Center and the Eight Ball now call home. Later, W.T. Grant moved to Wesleyan Park Plaza, changed its name to Grant City, then became K-mart.

In these advertisements you’ll find great deals from Harry Holder Ford on the corner of 4th and Frederica. Only now, it’s called Steve Jones Chrysler.

I had forgotten all about Burger Chef, a fast food burger joint that, for years, was McDonald’s only competition. I think we had two in Owensboro–one just down the street from the WBKR studios on Frederica and the other out on West Parrish.

There’s an also an ad for Star TV. I had completely forgotten about this electronics retailer which had two Owensboro locations–both downtown.

And, for those of you who are new or relatively new to Owensboro, there once was a third major player in the barbecue restaurant wars. It was Shady Rest out on East 60 right next to OMU. My family and I used to eat at Shady Rest all the time. Good stuff.

Check out that “Welcome to Owensboro” ad from the Velvet Milk Company. That building existed into my lifetime, but I barely remember it. But I do remember the days of the milkman and bottled milk and we always had it.

Now, one of the ads referred to something that I do not remember about the Bowlodrome. I guess I am too young to be familiar with Club 300 and its resident jazz organist, Alice Raye. But, it’s hilarious nonetheless.

And, finally, check out David James and Mike Blake from way back in the day–and, of course, the legendary Marcia Yockey. That is a riot. I knew David and Mike had been on 14 for as long as I could remember, but I don’t recall it EVER being known as “Newslens!” That’s hysterical!
