General Mills Expands Flour Recall Due to Possible E. Coli Outbreak

General Mills has announced that it is expanding its recent flour recall due to rising concerns about possible E. Coli contamination.  The company first issued a recall of Gold Medal, Gold Medal Wondra and Signature Kitchens flour on May 31st, 2016.  Since that time, the recall has extended to certain varieties of Betty Crocker cake mix and, now, General Mills is adding additional flour production dates to the initial recall.

In the meantime, the company is stressing the importance of not consuming uncooked flour.  "The illnesses reported to health officials continue to be connected with consumers reporting that they ate or handled uncooked dough or ate uncooked batter made with raw flour. No illnesses have been connected with flour that has been properly baked, cooked or handled."

To date, nearly 50 people have been affected by product-related illnesses and just over a dozen have been hospitalized.  There have been no deaths.  General Mills continues to be proactive in reducing risk and removing potentially tainted product from store shelves.
