It's unfortunate that, over the past 20 years, we've become accustomed to the possibility that we'll turn on the news on any given day and learn of another school shooting.

While it hasn't been something along the lines of a weekly occurrence, these deadly attacks have been happening at a disturbing enough rate since the Columbine tragedy in 1999 and West Paducah before it in 1997 that new security measures around the country have been adopted at our schools.

Henderson will join the ranks when the 2018-2019 school year begins next week.

The Henderson Gleaner's Douglas White spoke about the upgrades with Assistant Superintendent Steve Steiner, who gave him a rundown of what kids, faculty, and parents can expect to see when the doors open for the new year.

For one thing, there will be more cameras. And, at the entrances, students will now notice panic buttons. There will also be locked vestibules.

Also, large concrete barriers, called bollards, will be in place to prevent vehicles away from the front entrance.

Access cards instead of keys and metal-detecting wands are other visible changes.

Needless to say, local law enforcement will be involved as well.

On a personal note, I applaud these moves and hope they're an impetus for other school systems to begin heightened safety measures of their own.
