She tried to protect her family, but the assailant who entered her Bullitt County home at 4 in the morning overpowered her, took her gun, and turned it against her.
The Hillview, Kentucky woman was taken to the hospital and treated for a non-life threatening injury after being shot in the shoulder, but the man who did it got away.
Bullitt County Sheriff's Detective Scotty McGaha says the homeowner confronted the intruder at the back door after she heard a noise and grabbed her 9mm handgun.
According to Detective McGaha, the suspect is a white man in his mid-30s. He has no facial hair and was wearing a red baseball cap.
The Bullitt County sheriff's office is asking anyone who has information about the assailant to call (502) 543-2514 or (502) 543-1262.
