The other day, while I was driving on Frederica, an SUV, on multiple occasions, swerved very close to my car. I was in the left lane.

The driver, as I suspected, was on her phone. Now she wasn't texting. But she was still distracted enough that she almost lent me some of the paint General Motors applied to the left side of her vehicle.

I guess that sort of thing is always going to happen, dangerous as it is, and I guess we're just going to have to get used to it.

It was much longer after that that I was headed up Booth Avenue and noticed a guy on his bicycle ahead of me.

No, wait a minute, it was on Ford.

Anyway, he was riding his bike kind of herky-jerky and, when I approached him, I saw that he, too, was talking on his telephone.

He could very easily have turned into traffic and gotten hit the way he was mishandling the bicycle. Thankfully, that didn't happen. At least not that I know of.

Then, a few days ago, I was going into Wal-mart to pick up a few things and I saw a lady walking into the store and talking on her phone.

Whatever.

Then I saw her again inside the store and she was still talking. Long conversation. Again, whatever.

Ran into her again. Her cart was straddling the aisle. People couldn't get around her. She wasn't paying any attention to her surroundings. Still on the phone. I guess she was dictating that new version of the Gettysburg Address.

Anyway, another lady moved the cart so as to get around it and I thought there might be a little trouble. Nope. She never noticed. I got my coffee and picked up a few other things and headed for check-out.

And who, do you suppose, was right in front of me in the line? That's right. AT&T's Customer of the Year still talking to whomever the presumably VERY patient party was on the other end of the line.

Good Lord.

Listen, it's dangerous to be that distracted by your phone while driving or riding a bicycle.

And, yes, it is completely harmless to glue a phone to your hand and your ear in Wal-mart, block aisles, and not pay attention to the man telling you what your milk, deli ham, paper towels, coffee, dryer sheets, and scented candle come to.

BUT IT IS UNBELIEVABLY ANNOYING!!!

And I know I'm not alone here.

Geez, I remember when, if the phone rang and you weren't home, they had to call back. And the world didn't grind to a halt.

Now, I'm not saying we should go back to that. I like my phone and its convenience. But again, we have proof that if you aren't on you phone every waking second of every day...

...THE WORLD WILL NOT GRIND TO A HALT!

Thank you. That is all.
