Sunday was quite a momentous 24 hours for the NFL. The Green Bay Packers lost their first game of the season. The Indianapolis Colts WON their first game of the season. But those results pale in comparison to what happened in Houston during the Texans' loss to the Carolina Panthers. After U.S. Marine Scott Wood was killed in action in Iraq four weeks ago, his widow, Sara, and son, Landon, have been sharing a bedroom in her parents' home. Yesterday, Sara and Landon were invited to attend the Houston Texans/Carolina Panthers game in Houston. Scott had been a huge Texans fan, and Landon had never been to a professional football game. Figuring this was a perfect opportunity to let her son experience what his father had always enjoyed, Sara accepted the invitation. During the game, Scott's story was told over the stadium loud speakers as an emotional Sara listened. Also, Sara knew that afterward, there would be a presentation of gifts to her and Landon. But "gifts" turned out to be the understatement of the century. Operation Finally Home--a program created by the Bay Area Builders Association which is organization that extended the invitation to Sara and her son--presented the pair with a custom-built, mortgage-free home in the Houston suburb of Alvin. It was quite an emotional sequence that, I would imagine, no one in attendance will ever forget. After all, this is the Christmas that Sara and Landon will likely never, ever forget.
