TWO has announced that its 2013 summer musical presentation will be the classic, Man of La Mancha. There will be six performances June 7-16 in downtown Owensboro.
When it debuted in 1965, Man of La Mancha won five Tony awards, and introduced the extraordinarily popular song The Impossible Dream. Other songs include I, Don Quixote, Little Bird, Little Bird, and the ballad, Dulcinea.
Written by Dale Wasserman, Mitch Leigh, and Joe Darion, the play is based on the novel, Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes. In the musical adaptation, Cervantes is arrested and placed in prison to await interrogation by the Spanish Inquisition. The author entertains his fellow inmates with his story of a delusional old man who sees windmills as dragons and serving wenches as fair ladies. Other prisoners join in to create the songs and scenes that help weave the story.
A stirring and inspiring tale, Man of La Mancha features unforgettable music, and characters and themes that have moved readers for generations. Kelly Elder will direct the production. A veteran of the local theatre scene, Elder has staged many TWO shows in past seasons, including A Few Good Men and The Philadelphia Story.
The Theatre Workshop’s annual summer musical has become a favorite Owensboro tradition in which more than 100 volunteers collaborate to stage a classic family-friendly musical comedy. The 2013 summer musical presentation of Man of La Mancha is made possible by a gift from Danhauer’s Drugs.
