Mary Carrico School Serving Up Delicious Fish Fry Tonight
by Brittanni Elisabeth
In Knottsville, KY, Mary Carrico’s PTO is preparing to kick off Lent with a splash. For the past seven years, the parents and family members have always kicked off the Catholic holiday of Lent with a delicious feast. After Ash Wednesday every Friday throughout Lent until Good Friday, the school hosts a Fish Fry for everyone and anyone who would like to attend. Every other Friday some students will entertain by playing music and having a square dance. However no music will be performed on the 24th.
Fr. Pat Bittle see’s that this is an event of the season by making homemade batter for the fish to be fried in. The fish fry came as an idea from the PTO to help raise money for the school. The people preparing this meal are the parents and family members of the students. Every part of the meal is prepared homemade from scratch. In the past years, a turnout of 200-250 people has been counting; however, there is always room for more. People come from Lewisport, Owensboro, and Hawesville to enjoy this delicious meal. Having firsthand experience my family has been a part of the Knottsville community for years. Everyone in the community treats strangers as friends and friends as family. Talking with Tamera who is a parent that is preparing the meal she explained the best part of the meal wasn’t the food, but the community involvement. She explained they will start preparing Friday February 24th 2012 at 1 p.m. and the cooks will start cooking at 3:30 p.m. This event will take place in the gym of the school the rates are $10 for an adult plate and $5 for a child.
The menu for Friday’s event is fried catfish fillets, baked potatoes, fries, hush puppies, slaw, dessert and drink’s. When you purchase a $10 plate you will receive everything on the menu. New this year on the menu for children is cheese pizza. So come hungry and leave happy from tasting a delicious country meal. The church and families are more than happy to welcome you to help raise money for the children of the school.
