It was 1981 and Earl Thomas Conley  was enjoying the first of is eighteen #1 Billboard chart toppers. The tune, "Fire & Smoke"  In the 90's Earl's career tapered somewhat mainly due to some vocal cord difficulties he experienced. I remember hearing him speak at a convention in Nashville and he could hardly talk let alone sing. His songwriting wasn't hampered. Blake Shelton's hit, "All Over Me" was co-written by Earl, Blake and Mike Pyle.
