I'm not a hoarder but I have kept some treasured memories from my youth. Here I am, around ten years old, sitting on my mother's couch, looking at Viewmaster pictures. Behind me, on the shelves, are three items I am referring to.

The duck - which appears to be a Donald Duck -- but is not authorized by Disney is my oldest possession. My Uncle Hoot won it for me at the South Plains Fair in Lubbock when I was about six. It is very delicate, made of plaster of Paris, I believe. For decades it was kept in a room my brother and sister lovingly refer to as "the shrine" - a room where my mother stored mementoes of their youth as well as mine.

These two Scottish Terrier doggie planters were my mother's. In the same house as the picture of me with the duck these items sat on the shelves of various rooms in many of the homes my mama and daddy called home. I don't recall they ever had flowers in them. And, my mother didn't like dogs!  So, why these? Mama's gone, so I will never know for sure.
