This was taken my junior year of high school with my sophomore prom date Caroline Shively.  My things have changed since this photo was taken back in 1988.  As a matter of fact, my alma mater, Daviess County High School has established some brand new rules about its high school dances and parents, some of whom are former classmates of mine, are not happy about them at all.

According to the new rules in place at Daviess County High School, there are strict guidelines about who can and cannot attend school dances.  From what I understand and have been confirmed through various sources, only DCHS students can attend homecoming dances and Sadie Hawkins.  For example, if a high school senior at DCHS happens to invite a student from Apollo to the dance, the Apollo student would not be allowed under the new guidelines.

The only exception to the above rule is prom. However, there is a prom restriction as well and this one is really proving to be unpopular. While students from other schools will be allowed to attend DCHS' prom if invited, they must meet certain criteria. Per the new guidelines, prom dates MUST also be high school students and must prove so before they are allowed entry into the dance.  What this means is quite simple.  If a high school senior is dating a college freshman, that college freshman will not be allowed to attend the prom.

Here's the official letter that was sent to parents . . .

Here's what some folks are saying on Facebook about the new policy . . .

Lane Joe Brasher I am a parent of a daughter with a college freshman boyfriend. I feel like she is an excellent student and her boyfriend hasn't gotten in any trouble to speak of. It makes me feel like she is getting punished for someone else's trouble. As in life we all know it isn't fair all the time, so she will be going with her friends to homecoming if she decides to go at all.

Amy Helton Hildebrandt My daughter graduated from there. Her boyfriend graduated the year before her. Both very active with the school. Her Senior year, her boyfriend that was a freshman in college attended her prom with her at DC. They had been dating a year. Still dating. She wouldn't have gone with anyone else. She would've missed her senior prom. The dances help fund different organizations for the school. This will only cause a decline in attendance. I believe in rules, supervision, keeping our kids safe. However, keeping them out of school functions doesn't sound like a wise decision.

Stevi Byers Boyles My kids will go to Apollo and attend youth group with lots of DCHS kids. How crazy that they wouldn't be allowed at a DCHS dance!

Holly Taylor Magan-Stewart It is a bit overboard my daughter who is a senior this year is gonna miss her senior prom because of them. Her boyfriend graduate from DCHS in 2012 and can't go with her she is very upset.

Vicki Hill Boling How ridiculous! Last year, Emily was a senior at DCHS and Jesse was a college freshman. He went to her senior prom with her (he was a DCHS grad), and nothing horrible happened. Attendance will drop, and before you know it, there will be no proms. There are several high schools in this town, and kids don't always date within their own school. Sad. Glad mine are both older now.

Becky Bittel Morris I have mixed thoughts....for those seniors that have a boyfriend/girlfriend even one year older, its gonna stink not to be able to share senior prom with them

Gaynelle Haire Austin ...saying you can't bring someone who isn't a senior to your prom or isn't a DCHS student to any other dance is crazy.

Sherrie Stroud This has gotten ridiculous. There's other matter that they need to take care of than worried who they are going to bring to Prom. It has changed so much since I have graduated, we use to have dances after the games. Plus there was so much involvement with the students and school back then. Our society has changed so much.

What do YOU think about the new rules in place regarding dances at Daviess County High School?
