I've heard of shoes, hams, guitars being dropped on New Year's Eve, but this one has to be one of the craziest. For 20 years, the Smoky Mountain town of Brasstown, NC has dropped a live possum to ring in the new year. Here's what it looked like in 2011.

Well after a three-year court battle with PETA, the possum drop organizers opted to not drop a live animal this year. In fact there were two laws passed by the North Carolina lawmakers ensuring the drop could continue. Read them here and here. Instead? Organizer Clay Logan said they may drop a dead possum, roadkill, OR possum stew. I don't think a steaming post of stew dropping would be either appetizing or practical. I suppose anything is better than this.
