Marching band changed my life when I got to high school. It was fun, it was hard work, and, it was all about one of my favorite things in the world, music! Best of all, the friends I made and the lessons I learned are invaluable, and I will carry them with me for the rest of my life. Both Owensboro Catholic HS and Apollo HS will host their annual marching band contests on Saturday. You should really try go to one or both!

First up, the Owensboro Catholic Marching Invitational will get underway with opening ceremonies at 10am, then the first competing band, McLean County, will take the field at 10:15am. Other bands competing at Steele Stadium on Saturday: Dawson Springs, Webster County, Hancock County, Edmonson County, Ohio County (!), Hopkinsville, Henderson County, Meade County, and Barren County. Owensboro Catholic will perform in exhibition 1:15pm, and the awards ceremony will start around 1:30pm. Here's a performance from Catholic during last year's home competition. Did you know they finished 3rd at State Finals last year? Cool! Admission is $5.00, children 5 and under are free.

After taking a breather, head on over to Apollo High School for the Apollo Eagle Classic which will get underway with opening ceremonies at 5:45pm. The first band to take the field at 6:00pm will be McLean County. Other bands competing at Apollo include: Hancock County, Ohio County, Hopkinsville, Owensboro HS, Meade County, Henderson County, Barren County, Muhlenberg County, and Daviess County. Apollo will perform in exhibition at 9:00pm with the awards ceremony to follow at 9:15pm.  Admission is $5.00. Here's a clip of Apollo's show this year, entitled "Shattered".

Even though the forecast looks great and it will be warming back up on Saturday, be sure to keep an eye on the sky just in case. And save a funnel cake for me!
