In 1967, Larissa Lewis, like so many mothers of the day, received the awful news that her son, Charles Rates Lewis Jr., was killed in Vietnam. He was ambushed. Charles was only 22 years old.

WAVE3 in Louisville reports that WFIE's Steve Maugeri spoke with Larissa, now 94, and her son Knox, one of Charles' 16 siblings, and both say they'll never forget that day nearly 50 years ago. It's still haunting.

Now, Charles Rates Lewis Jr., the only African-American from Owensboro killed in Vietnam, will be memorialized with a highway sign that will bear his name.
