UPDATE: Mayor Ron Payne announced yesterday morning at Rooster Booster that the Owensboro Fireworks would take place as part of this year’s Veteran’s Day Celebration in November.

Last Thursday, Owensboro's Independence Day fireworks show was cancelled due to the threat of rain. The Messenger Inquirer reported that, "Mayor Ron Payne said, the fireworks display has been postponed until either New Year's Eve or in conjunction with the grand opening of the new Owensboro Convention Center, whenever that happens."

Personally, I think the choice to postpone the show until winter was not a good one. Fireworks define your summer and are a symbolic gift of our American freedoms. Not only will it be very cold and uncomfortable outside on January 1, but the fireworks that Owensboro had budgeted to celebrate the 4th of July will now be allocated to something totally different. The holiday season already has us running around like crazy - why add one more thing to the mix?
