It's the beginning of the end of an era. The Owensboro National Guard Armory on Parrish Avenue will soon be no more.

Completed in 1948, the Armory is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but the demolition process has begun and the venerable old building will be gone by the end of October.

It will be replaced by a new tennis center.

The new Armory is located next to the airport.

I was only in the old Armory building one time, and I cannot remember why. I was a little kid and I was with my grandfather and...no wait, it was my uncle. My grandfather used to baby-sit me but sometimes he'd be over at my great-aunt and great-uncle's house, and on occasion I'd go running around with my uncle--a carpenter who had an amazing workshop under the house.

I don't know why we were at the Armory, but I remember it being VERY BIG. And some man gave me a peppermint out of his pocket. Did old men just do that back in the day?

I'm straying.

The Armory is a cool old building, and I guess it needed to be replaced. But it sure will be funny driving by that Parrish Avenue/Hickman Avenue corner and not seeing it anymore.

If you hurry, you can still get a peak before it's gone.
