I heard about this possibility a few months back, but it has now released that the change will be occurring. Owensboro Public Schools announced today that they are amending their policy for serving meals to students for the 2013-2014 school year under the National School Lunch/School Breakfast Programs.

All Preschool through 8th grade students in the Owensboro Public School System will receive free breakfast and lunch at school beginning in August. Owensboro High School students are not included in the program and will continue to pay for lunch. High school students that qualify for free or reduced meals will continue to receive them.

According to the press release:

The Community Eligibility Option that is part of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) makes it possible to offers meals to all students at no charge in schools that have 40% or more students directly certified for the free and reduced lunch program. As a result, Owensboro Public Schools are able to provide free meals to students in Preschool through 8th grade.

Students at the following schools will receive free breakfast and lunch:

  • Hager Preschool
  • Cravens Elementary School
  • Estes Elementary School
  • Foust Elementary School
  • Sutton Elementary School
  • Newton Parrish Elementary School
  • Seven Hills Alternative School
  • Owensboro Middle School North Campus
  • Owensboro Middle School South Campus
