The "summer job" is a rite of passage but finding that "cool" summer job, is even better! So, as thousands of Owensboro students get ready to hit the streets to find that perfect balance of work and play time this summer, we asked around to uncover some unique and out-of-the ordinary summer jobs in the Tri-state!

5) Corn De-Tassling

This is a regional favorite! (ok, maybe favorite is too strong of a word) But for many Tri-State kids, they'll hit the cornfields of rural Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky to detassel corn this summer. Rodney, that's the good looking guy with the cheesy grin up there, did this for a summer back in the 80's. He made about $4.00/hour (hey! that was good money back then) sweating, getting dirty and detasseling corn. You'll have to go from farm to farm to find a job doing this these days, but they're out there, and they pay fairly well. Starting at about $7.50/hour with bonuses and such. Most detasselers employ kids as young as 13. So, get to work!

4) Parking Lot Clean-up at Holiday World

We got this little gem from one of our Digital Sales team members, Gino Delacoma. One summer, back before Holiday World was a really humongous amusement park, Gino's friend's dad got the contract to clean up the park every day before it opened. Problem was, he didn't have any employees to do the job, so Gino and his buddy were employed to work. They made about $8.oo/hour cleaning up everything people leave behind in the parking lot and the park, including the trash cans PLUS sweeping and hosing down all the ice cream and soda pop stickiness left behind the day before! And did we mention they had to clean this up from 4am to 10am, almost entirely in the dark? Still, Gino says it's one of the best summer jobs he ever had!

3) Gutter Clean Out

Next up on the hit parade of unique summer jobs is cleaning out gutters! Corey Eldridge, again from our sales department, told us he went around and cleaned out gutters one summer to make money. He earned about $20.00 per job. Not bad, we say! And, you can definitely find a job doing all sorts of things like that this summer. Just apply at a landscaping company or any of the local hardware stores. They'll know someone that needs just that kind of work done! Makes for a very interesting summer job!

2) Veterinarian's Assistant

Only our own Joe Lowe of 1490 WOMI could come up with this one! Joe worked as a veterinarian's assistant one summer. His job was to shave down the animals before they were neutered or spayed and then take care of removal after surgery. Then he had to clean up the operating room. Definitely an interesting job there, Joe! Plenty of veterinarians are looking for help this summer (maybe not that kind of assistance) so check around and ask. Also, we know for a fact that local veterinarians are a wealth of animal-sitting and walking jobs for the summer!

1) English Teacher (and Monkey Sitter) in Cambodia

And then there's our Events Coordinator Meridyth Driskill. I knew, just knew, we'd get the most unique job of all from our Meridyth. And I wasn't disappointed, not one bit! Meridyth spent a summer in Cambodia teaching English. (While she was there she wanted to earn some extra money so she was employed to babysit a monkey) Now, while going all the way to a foreign country might be a little extreme, you could check with your local library to see if they have any literacy programs that are looking for extra help this summer.

As for me, I worked at Hamburger Heaven in Eastland Mall back in the 80's. Sounds boring, until you realize I did it to meet boys. Hey, I'm not stupid. Boys like hamburgers and fries!

The bottom line to all of these unique and interesting (and yes, even normal) Owensboro summer jobs is that you can find something, anywhere, doing just about anything, to make money over the summer if you just look hard enough and use your imagination.
