THIS is what it sounds like when doves cry.  Some local Prince fans shelled out big bucks (up to $275 per ticket) to see the pop legend in concert Saturday night at the Louisville Palace.  But it wasn't exactly what they expected.

See that photo?  That's the only one Crystal Newton took.  Apparently Prince doesn't like having his photo taken by fans.  Video either.  In fact, former WBKR intern Jenny Wells was in the audience and shot a brief (7 to 8 second) video and then security "accosted everyone holding up a smartphone."

And it got worse.  According to Crystal Newton's husband, Rodney, even Prince's drummer (a Louisville native) was pleading with fans to put their phones away and quit taking photos.  Then, the concert took a rather unexpected turn.

In defiance, the production staff turned the stage lights off and Prince just played in the dark.  In fact, Rodney says a third of the show was played with the stage lights off and "blazingly bright LEDS facing the audience."  He went on to say, "The whole experience was flawed.  Sound problems.  Long instrumental jams in the dark.  (Prince) played for one hour and fifteen minutes with no opening act.  Money not well spent."

However, for Rodney, there was one saving grace.  "The bright side was I got to see Prince with my wife and that is a bucket list item I can now mark off."  And that's how my friend, Lisa Frye, felt.  She had second row seats for the first show and another pair of tickets for the 11pm show.

"He just played 90 minutes since there was another show right after ours. I'm going to the 11pm show tonight and am curious if that will be a longer show. He played A LOT of the hits. I was surprised. It was pretty magical."
