State Trooper Survives Awful Traffic Accident, Reminds Us to ‘Move Over’

I've covered Kentucky's 'Move Over' law before, but a Facebook post over the weekend not only reminded me that we can't be reminded enough about moving over when an officer is on the shoulder of the road.

It also reminded me of a time several years ago when I was traveling to Nashville and Interstate 65 was jam-packed.

I was coming around a bend at the bottom of a hill and I was behind a big van moving very slowly.

When the right-lane traffic cleared enough, I got over. But just as I did I saw that a Tennessee state trooper had pulled someone over.

I had not seen the trooper until I got around the van.

I slammed on my brakes, but it wasn't enough. The officer finished with the driver he had pulled over and then pulled ME over.

I apologized and explained that I hadn't seen him when I moved into the right lane. He asked if we had a "Move Over" law in Kentucky. At that time, I didn't know if we did but told that didn't matter since I always move over anyway.

Except for that time...for the reasons I detailed. He was very nice and told me the story about a state trooper who, the week before, had been killed by a driver on Interstate 40 who hadn't moved over.

I was sent on my way with a warning.

I always move over or slow down. I hope you do, too.
