Man’s Best Friend Gets Too Close for Dave Spencer’s Comfort

The above-average-to-comfortable temperatures we've experienced so far this spring have made nightly walks irresistible. So I've been power-driving the Skechers these last four weeks. It's been great. Load up the mobile, grab the ear buds, and hit the bricks. Thankfully, I failed to do that second part last night.

Yes, Wasps Are Scary, But Yellow Jackets Are Worse

As I was reading about Jaclyn's encounter with a wasp, and then Dave Spencer's, I was reminded of a terrifying childhood experience which I relived a few weeks ago. Although I'm not allergic, that I know of, to things that sting, I will run like a banshee the moment one appears a few feet within my vacinity.

Dave Spencer Answers the Call, Donates Blood at Walmart Blood Drive [VIDEO]

I've been a regular blood donor for about 4 years. I try to give every two months. But I've been fortunate on the occasions I've forgotten, because I've received phone calls at those times informing me of a shortage of O negative blood, the universal blood type. And, yes, that makes me a universal donor.

St. Jude Radiothon Sparks Long-Forgotten Memories

It was a simple phone call to inform my mom that the Louisville/Cincinnati basketball game was on ESPN--she graduated from U of L in 1954. Just a simple phone call. Then the gears started turning, connections were made, and my mother suddenly remembered an amazing story from her time spent at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in 1952 as part of her training curriculum. So she wrote the following essay:

WBKR Takes the Polar Bear Plunge [Video]

The Polar Bear Plunge was Saturday morning at The Hines Center in Philpot.  And, for the second consecutive year, record crowds and participants turned out to raise money for and support Special Olympics Kentucky!  233 plungers walked the plank at the Hines Center lake and plunged into the chilly waters and, in doing so, they raised $55,000 . . . an all-time record for Owensboro's event.  As you know, Jaclyn and I encouraged listeners (and a couple of fellow deejays) to join us in the effort.  And, yep!!  We've got video!!

Dave Spencer: Two Truths and a Lie

I guess I need to get out more. But I'm just now hearing about this game "Two Truths and a Lie," where you tell the crowd two things about yourself that are true and one thing that isn't. They have to guess which are true and which one isn't. I dig it. Let's do it. Take the challenge. How well do you know me? Pick the lie and find out.

WBKR Surprises Listener/Stalker at U.S. Bank on Valentine’s Day [Video]

If you tune into The WBKR Waking Crew, you are likely quite familiar with our friend, Melissa.  Or rather, should I say . . . Meliiiiiiiiiissssssssaaaaaaa.  Just before Valentine's Day, I was contacted by Melissa's sister, who was itching to play a Valentine's Day prank on her sister.  See, Melissa's family always accuses her of being a WBKR stalker and they just happened to find a holiday card with the word "stalker" in it.  Naturally, they asked if we would make a surprise delivery and we said, "Heck to the yes!"  Watch!

Conversation Threads: From Documentaries to Drill Sergeants to…Three Bean Salad?!?

This actually looks MUCH better than the slop I ate in 1972. (Gudlyf, Flickr.com) Let's see, how did it all begin? I was at the front desk today, chatting with Moon Mullins and Roxianne the Receptionist, and we began discussing fast food. This led to a mention of the Morgan Spurlock documentary "Super-Size Me" and the vague, if not a little dishonest, point it makes. Then came talk of the amazing and frightening documentary "Food, Inc." Then we segued to school lunches. Oh, yeah, now I remember...three bean salad.

Dave Spencer’s First Impression of a Superstar’s Biggest Hit Was Not Very Good

I know you never get a second chance to make a first impression, but music doesn't fall victim to that fact so easily. How many times have any of us loved a song the first time we heard it only grow sick of it later? Conversely, how many times have we really hated something upon first listen before it eventually grows on us? I made a little discovery that illustrates this phenomenon quite well.

Dave Spencer’s AT&T Waiting Game Comes to an End

About a month ago, I received a notice in the mail from a collection agency.  A COLLECTION AGENCY!!!! It was in reference to a phone bill from AT&T. Uh, I had just paid my AT&T bill and was current. So I was clueless.
