The private plane they were in crashed near Dyersburg, Tennessee, March 3, 1963. Also perishing was pilot Randy Hughes.

Patsy was at the top of her career at her death. Her life was portrayed in two films, Coal Miner's Daughter, the story of her friendship with Loretta Lynn. The second is Sweet Dreams, titled after one of Patsy's hits and starring Jessica Lange.
