WBKR NASCAR Preview: Pure Michigan 400

After a weekend of both left and right turns, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will make their 2nd visit of the season at Michigan International Speedway, the sight of this weekend’s event. NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be trying to defend his title at Michigan after going to victory lane in the June event.

Last week’s winner, Marcos Ambrose set a qualifying record at the 2-mile oval in June with a speed of over 203 MPH. Since then, drivers and teams have returned to the track for a Goodyear tire test where NASCAR tested and developed a new tire for this weekend’s event. Speeds are expected to be slower this weekend due to the tire compound change and wear on the track’s repaved asphalt. Can he make it two in a row? Marcus told Fox News, “We really got a good shot at it there. We have to really concentrate on car speed”.

In March, 1963, I was working at my first country station, KLLL, in my hometown of Lubbock, TX. The tragic news of Patsy Cline's death in a plane crash near Dyersburg, TN., came as such a shock. She, at the time, was country music's biggest female star. Also, passing away were country singers Hawkshaw Hawkins and Cowboy Copas. Now, we've learned from Taste of Country that Patsy is the subject of an upcoming exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. Patsy Cline: Crazy for Loving You will open in the museum’s East Gallery on Aug. 24, signing rent for a ten-month run.

Today, July 26, 2012, I recall a day 44 years ago when I was at KCKN in Kansas City and received a call from former KCKN deejay Early Williams, who was working in Nashville for Shelby Singleton at Plantation Records. Early told me he had a acetate (a record-looking, round object on which test pressings were issued) to send me of a new singer and a song written by Tom T. Hall, who had had some success already as a writer-singer. The song was HARPER VALLEY P.T.A., and I was the first to play it. It was an immediate smash and very quickly became a number one country and pop hit. It went on to sell eight million copies.

Well, I shall live a LONG time because of the coffee I drink.
According to a new study by the National Cancer Institute, coffee may actually prolong life.

I drink a full pot -- 10- cups -- every morning starting at 3:45 whenI arrive at the station and concluding at 9:00. I take a break and return at 10 a.m. when I continue sipping coffee all day.
