Winter Weather Advisory in Effect for Parts of WBKR Listening Area

Is this a joke?  A big old nasty, slushy, snowy, cosmic joke?  The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the extreme northern parts of the tri-state and a Winter Weather Advisory for areas along the Ohio River.  The reason . . . Winter Storm Virgil.  That's the name The Weather Channel gave him, though I have a few other choice names we could christen him with!!  So how much snow can we expect?

Lightning Safety Tips

I was sitting in my apartment Thursday night, and I was calm. I was watching a movie I had saved on my DVR, but I was checking Twitter on my phone to keep up with any severe weather information. I don't know how many lightning strikes there were, but it was something to see, from the safety of my living room.

According to the NOAA, each year in the United States, more than 400 people are struck by lightning. On average, about 70 people are killed and others suffer permanent neurological disabilities. Lightning often strikes outside the area of heavy rain and may strike as far as 10 miles from any rainfall. If you hear thunder, a thunderstorm is close enough to pose an immediate lightning threat to your location.

Deadly Tornadoes Hit Hard In Indiana & Kentucky

Large twisters caused severe damage & multiple deaths in Kentucky and Indiana with reports of tennis ball size hail, damaging winds and many tornadoes touching the ground and causing widespread damage. Just today the National Weather Service issued 255 Tornado Warnings and 312 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

Above Normal Tornadoes Expected In 2012

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, tornadoes are expected to be above normal for 2012 going to pray and hope that isn't the case. In 2011 there was a report of 1,709 tornadoes in the U.S. close to the record of 1,817 set in 2004.  2011 is ranked as the 4th most deadly tornado season ever recorded in the United States.

The National Weather Service says there's a possibility of Severe Weather late tomorrow afternoon and evening especially if conditions become more unstable tomorrow with temperatures expected to be in the mid to upper 60's.
