July 21, 2011 I was talking earlier with News25 Chief Meteorologist Wayne Hart and he mentioned that while we will continue to experience excessive heat at least through this weekend, we likely won't be seeing anything like the 126 degree heat index we had last week. It's just that this heat wave is lasting longer. So we will all be seeking ways in which keep cool. Steve Horn gave us some good ideas for the indoors. But some of us have to be outdoors. And there are those of us who may not be able to keep our homes as comfortable as we'd like. Thank goodness, then, for relief shelters.
July 17, 2011 Can we go ahead and mark it down? 2011 is one of the worst weather years I can ever remember. Record winter cold, tornadoes, floods, and now this heat! I might have included last week's extraordinary and national-headline-making heat reading in my recent post about the worst storms I've ever experienced, except for the fact that a heat wave doesn't qualify. But it does qualify when the categories are "discomfort" and "dangerous."
July 14, 2011 I don’t remember very many really bad storms as a child. We’d have tornado warnings and the sirens would sound. That would frighten the life out of me, but then we’d head over to my grandmother’s house and go down into her basement and then nothing would materialize. And when I was kid, I LOVED snowstorms. But I’m all grown up now. And I have grown-up attitudes about some of these nasty storms. In a nutshell, I’m not a fan. Here now are the worst storms I can remember:
July 11, 2011 Third Baptist Church in Owensboro is one busy building. And I'm not even talking about weekly services and regular church activities throughout the week. Third Church opens its doors to the homeless in need of a meal on Thursdays and accommodates a recovery group on Tuesdays. And now, it plays host to licensed couples therapist and pastoral counselor Joe Bob Pierce and Cornerstone Counseling Services.
Last night I was watching CBS 44 at the beginning of the show it talked about UniFirst, a company in Owensboro; they are the leading supplier of uniforms, workwear and related products to businesses big and small since 1936. It was a very interesting show the President and CEO put on a wig and fake mustache and worked along side with people in the company to see how it was to work there and what could be done to make life easier in the company.

But I'll try to withhold playing the song as I drive down West Parrish Avenue in Owensboro. Thanks to Grace Pointe Church and this tongue-in-cheek little number, I had a big enough laugh that I needed to pull over.
July 1, 2011 While doing my live broadcast yesterday, I received a text from my sister that cracked me up. It said, "I'M SICK AND TIRED OF ALL THE ROAD CLOSINGS!!!" Wait, let me check. Yes, it did come with three exclamation points. Don't want to short-change. But, yeah, it was funny because I had said that just the other day as I was trying to get from the WBKR studios to the bypass; I go the back way--up Byers to New Hartford. Well, I did, anyway.
June 26, 2011 You can sure tell when a city's limits are expanding. And, no, I'm not talking about the obvious signs like the actual retail and dining establishments cropping up at a breakneck pace. No I'm talking about...roadkill. Yep, it's a pretty grim indicator, but an indicator nonetheless, as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I'm seeing more and more wildlife within the city and county limits than I have ever seen before--the WBKR parking lot included.
June 23, 2011 I've always wanted to do a theme vacation where I travel a famous route, trail, or path. Route 66 leaps immediately to mind, only because that's probably the closest. Or so I thought. A group of cyclists called Spoke 'N Revolutions Youth Cycling is travelling the Underground Railroad--and they're coming through Owensboro.
