Conversation Threads: From Documentaries to Drill Sergeants to…Three Bean Salad?!?

This actually looks MUCH better than the slop I ate in 1972. (Gudlyf, Flickr.com) Let's see, how did it all begin? I was at the front desk today, chatting with Moon Mullins and Roxianne the Receptionist, and we began discussing fast food. This led to a mention of the Morgan Spurlock documentary "Super-Size Me" and the vague, if not a little dishonest, point it makes. Then came talk of the amazing and frightening documentary "Food, Inc." Then we segued to school lunches. Oh, yeah, now I remember...three bean salad.

Dave Spencer’s Favorites: The Cat, the Carburetor Fluid, and the Crazy Lady

My favorite pet when I was younger was our cat, Austin. We'd had dogs when I was a little kid, but only one of them ever took to me. And he was a great dog, but Austin ranks at the top. In fact, Austin acted like a dog--he'd come when you'd whistle. And he happens to be an integral part of one of my favorite stories.

"Back When" by Tim McGraw. Runtime: 4 minutes, 23 seconds. I was fortunate to be listening to WBKR, recently, when I pulled up to the intersection at 24th and Frederica in Owensboro.

Dave Spencer Is Searching for the Perfect Chocolate Milk

While I am drastically cutting back on my "sweets" intake for 2012, one weakness remains. And, actually, I can't really call it a weakness because it just provides me far too much joy. It's chocolate milk.

Owensboro Tornado Made for a Memorable Monday 12 Years Ago Today [VIDEO]

Has it really been 12 years since a massive F3 tornado swept through Owensboro destroying more than 100 homes and and damaging nearly 800 more? Time has certainly flown in the dozen years since the city was hit by that nasty storm.

Dave Spencer Recalls ‘Brushes with Greatness’ [VIDEO]

When I was in college, my friends and I were devoted David Letterman fans. I still am. In the 80s, Letterman had a segment called "Brushes with Greatness" during which he would go up into the audience and pick a random member and have him or her detail a "brush with greatness"--a meeting or encounter with someone famous. We sort of adopted the term and began cataloguing our own "brushes with greatness." But ours were with anyone who was even remotely famous. And over the years, I have collected a few.

Wanna Quit Smoking? Then SWITCH & QUIT!

Did you know that 220 smoking-related deaths occur in Daviess County every year?  I didn't know that either, but the statistics don't really surprise me.  I know folks who smoke and all have contemplated quitting at one point or another.  I assume each knows that he/she could wind up as a member of that ill-fated 220 Club.  But, there's some really GREAT news for people wanting to quit smoking.  The University of Louisville wants to help and they have launched a program to inform smokers about a "scientifically credible option for quitting . . . by substituting safer smoke-free tobacco products for cigarettes."  The program is called, quite simply, Switch and Quit.

Kentucky Wesleyan Athletics Leaving Great Lakes Valley Conference, Forming New League

If you're a fan of college sports, you've likely become well aware of its biggest off-season story--the rampant realignment of athletics conferences. In fact, changes have been occurring with such frequency that a separate website devoted strictly to keeping us all up to speed has been created. But now, realignment fever has set in right across the street from the WBKR studios; Kentucky Wesleyan College is leaving the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Owensboroans Could Be Playing ‘Bridge’ Annually

It was like we had all been released out of a sling shot. The bridge opens to foot and bike traffic and we can't get on it quick enough. I had a great time, just like everyone else. Yesterday morning, I was looking again at the photos I took when I walked the bridge on Friday. And then I'm reading in the Messenger-Inquirer that Mayor Ron Payne is working on an annual "Bridge Day."
