Kentucky Wesleyan Athletics Leaving Great Lakes Valley Conference, Forming New League

If you're a fan of college sports, you've likely become well aware of its biggest off-season story--the rampant realignment of athletics conferences. In fact, changes have been occurring with such frequency that a separate website devoted strictly to keeping us all up to speed has been created. But now, realignment fever has set in right across the street from the WBKR studios; Kentucky Wesleyan College is leaving the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Owensboroans Could Be Playing ‘Bridge’ Annually

It was like we had all been released out of a sling shot. The bridge opens to foot and bike traffic and we can't get on it quick enough. I had a great time, just like everyone else. Yesterday morning, I was looking again at the photos I took when I walked the bridge on Friday. And then I'm reading in the Messenger-Inquirer that Mayor Ron Payne is working on an annual "Bridge Day."

Gabe’s Restaurant Was a Benchmark in Owensboro Fine Dining

It's called a dinner club card--that gold thing in the picture to the left. It was discovered while unearthing family relics. I had never seen it before. I assume it belonged to my dad. And I assume that tearing each "month tab" off the card after a certain amount of meals is how the card was used. I'm only guessing. But I do know this: back in the day, Gabe's Restaurant was a standard bearer for dining out in Owensboro.

Owensboro’s Blue Bridge Set to Reopen Friday

I got the text alert. Then, off in the distance, I heard a chorus of "Hallelujahs!" The blue bridge--the Glover Cary Bridge, to be precise--will reopen this Friday. Our long local nightmare has ended. Okay, so maybe that's a bit too extreme a characterization, but I know folks who will be very happy to put a period on using the Natcher Bridge as a detour. And shrinking gasoline bills are always welcome.

Dave Spencer Recalls His Participation in Unreleased Western [VIDEO]

In a recent post, I wrote about movies that had been filmed in Kentucky. There was one that I did not mention that was shot right here in Daviess County. I left it out for a couple of reasons: I wasn't sure if it had ever been released--I've never seen it; and I wanted to save it for a future post. Well, the future is here. So let's relive the past.

Old Newspapers and Magazines Mark Time, Make Great Keepsakes

Photos in the September 12th issue of the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer of Pfc. Brandon S. Mullins' graveside service struck me so, that I decided to  A) save the newspaper, and B) write about saving newspapers. My father had always done that. My mother still does. My sister and I have hung on to a few. It seems to be a family trait—an unusual one, maybe, but a trait nonetheless. But as I was locating old newspapers and clips, I noticed something at the bottom of a basket in my mother’s living room. It was a scrapbook—and a game changer. As it turns out, it was a scrapbook full of history. So I altered my plans.

Dave Spencer Doesn’t Understand Bicyclists’ Attitudes

Okay, I would like to say something to the bicyclists of the world: “I’m sorry.” I’m not doing it out of spite, I can assure you. And I actually have to do it every single day. My livelihood kind of depends on it. Many others like me are in the same boat. But somehow I feel you’re not as angry with them as you are with me. I know some of you may think it’s wrong, but it really isn’t. And I promise you I’ll do a better job of understanding your position, but please try to understand mine. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO DRIVES A CAR!

Hurricane Irene and Owensboro Tornado Seem More Frightening From Afar

Now that the east coast has, thankfully, said, “Good night, Irene,” I’d like to toss in my two cents regarding a comparison between the hurricane and our very own beloved 2000 tornado. First, I can’t speak for any of those who were affected by Hurricane Irene, nor would I make that attempt. But after seeing a photo of Irene from space, I thought, “That’s what I would have liked to have seen eleven years ago when the tornado ripped through.”

Filmmaker PJ Starks Continues to Expand Filmography, Owensboro’s Profile

Owensboro filmmaker PJ Starks--a videographer and editor for Owensboro Community & Technical College's OCTV 71--has been quietly building quite a filmography right here inside Daviess County for more than three years. And now he's in the early stages of his next project, a romantic horror comedy called Necromance. In fact, horror was the genre of his 2008 debut, Hallows Eve: Slaughter on Second Street.

Owensboro Streets Now an Obstacle Course

So, now that we've all had a good long taste of navigating the streets of Owensboro in recent days and weeks, can we mark the obstacle course task off our list of assignments should we all decide to join the police academy? Because of Veach & Byers, a long stretch of Frederica, and any given point on Scherm Road, my steering wheel needs a chiropractor.
