This year's Polar Bear Plunge is going to feature a bunch of changes.  The first change, announced a few months ago, is the big move to downtown Owensboro.  Another huge change will be the Plunge itself.  Instead of jumping into a lake or a swimming pool, this year's plungers are going to climb up a gigantic inflatable slide and barrel down it into a pool of freezing cold water.  It's going to be

Special Olympics Kentucky has cooked (or baked) up a good reason to spend the morning of Valentine's Day in downtown Owensboro.  February 14th marks the annual Polar Bear Plunge, which will take place for the first time at Mitch McConnell Plaza.  But this year, in addition to shaking up the Plunge, Special Olympics is bringing a new event to town to go with it.  It's the Donut Dash 5K.  Yep!  It's

I have already shared the video of the 2014 Polar Bear PUSH!  Yes, I have renamed the "Plunge" the "Push" because my friend David Bristow, from Southern Star, offered up $100 to Special Olympics Kentucky if he could PUSH me into the 12-degree water.  And while the video is hilarious, it doesn't quite capture the play-by-play like these photos from Mark Smith Photography.  Check

12 degrees.  That's how cold the water was Saturday for the 2014 Polar Bear Plunge.  12 degrees, People!  But, 157 plungers were there to jump in it anyway and help raise money for Special Olympics Kentucky.  I was going to plunge too . . . but had a change of heart when my friend David Bristow, from Southern Star, offered up an additional $100 to charity if he could push me in.  Naturally, I said

How's that for an action shot?  Just a fraction of a second after hovering above the Hines Center Lake, we were swimming in it.  And a fraction of a second after this pic was taken,  I  was swearing like Andrew Dice Clay.  And, you know what?  I'm ready to do it all over again.  The freezing AND the swearing.  LOL!  The 2014 Polar Bear Plunge is coming up Saturday, February 8th at The Hines Center

It's that time again.  And, yes!  Here at WBKR, we are going to be Freezin' for a Reason at the 2014 Polar Bear Plunge.  It's Saturday, February 8th at The Hines Center in Philpot and we'll be among the hundreds of folks who suck it up, throw caution to the shrinkage-inducing wind and jump into the icy cold waters of The Hines Center lake.  Here are some video highlights from last year's Plunge! Jaclyn complains, moans and groans.  Dave Spencer whimpers like a 7-week-old puppy.  And I scream, "This is gonna suck!"  That's typically how the Polar Bear Plunge goes each year when we jump into The Hines Center lake to help raise money for Special Olympics Kentucky.  And, this past weekend, we suited up again and prepared ourselves for a plunge into 22-degree water.  Standing with us

This is HILARIOUS!!  Saturday marked the 2013 Polar Bear Plunge at The Hines Center in Philpot and 200 plungers showed up to jump in the chilly, 22 degree waters of the Hines Center lake.  Among them was Kizzy, who joined WBKR's team, Jimmy Parrot's Plungers.  The cameras were rolling as Kizzy, decked out in a scuba suit, arm puffers and Korger bags, walked out onto the dock to prepare for her plu

Today at the Hines Center in Philpot a large number of teams leapt into the 22 degree water (actually 41 degrees on top) and braved the icy welcome upon emerging for Special Olympics. Your intrepid photographer was there and uploaded a number of pictures from the scene, which you are free to review at your leisure...
