On this date in 1968, Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" is number one. And, I -- Moon Mullins -- had something to do with it. Bob Johnston, who produced Johnny's music sent me two acetates (test copies) of "Folsom Prison Blues" recorded at Folsom Prison and a song called, "The Folk Singer". The label was more interested in the "Folksinger" as a hit. I was music director at an influential Kansas City radio station at that time. When I heard "Folsom" I immediately recommended that they release that as a single.
