The Owensboro Lions Club 2012 Soap Box Derby activities get underway this Thursday, May 31st. Racers will be racing on a brand new 900-foot track in Ben Hawes Park. Events begin Thursday and run through Sunday, June 3rd. Racing begins Saturday, June 2nd. This is the twelfth year the Owensboro Lions Club has sponsored the Soap Box Derby.

In addition to racing, this year's event will feature demos courtesy of the USA Olympic Luge Team as they recruit young athletes, ages 11-14 to learn "slider luge" as a way to train and to qualify for the USA Luge Junior Team. To register, click here.

The Lions will also have a baseball toss-clocking machine, concessions will be available and part of this year's donations will to go toward the Race for the Cure. Here's a complete event schedule.

Thursday, May 31st

3:00pm: Driver check-in; practice runs, impound

7:30pm: Registered drivers "Banquet" -hamburgers and hotdogs at the picnic pavillion

8:30pm: Showing of the movie 25 Hill at the track

Friday, June 1st

8:ooam: Track preparations: car/driver check-in

9:30am: USA Luge Demo

10:0oam: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

11:00am-1:00pm: Car/Driver check-in; practice runs; impound

1:00pm: USA Luge Clinic

3:00pm-6:00pm: Car/Driver check-in; practice runs; impound

6:30pm: USA Luge Clinic

Saturday, June 2nd

7:00am: Driver check-in; Driver safety meeting

8:00am: Racing begins!

11:30am: Lunch served

12:30pm: Racing until complete

Sunday, June 3rd

10:00am: Final USA Luge Clinic
