I remember the Petersburg tornado very well. I was in this building when it happened. We were relaying information as best we could from what we were getting over the phone. In 1990, there was no social media.

The deadly Petersburg twister was part of a much larger tornado outbreak that did the most damage in Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana, and Southwestern Ohio.

But Northern Indiana, Southeastern Michigan, and Southern Kentucky also experienced isolated tornadoes, as well.

The 37 twisters on June 2nd, 1990 were an Indiana record for a single day.

The death toll for Southern Indiana was 12. For Petersburg, 7. That made it the deadliest outbreak since April 3, 1974, the one that all but destroyed Brandenburg, KY.
