Keith Todd - Public Information Officer, District One & Two, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

As a reminder, a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans to close the eastbound US 60 entry and exit ramps at the KY 2698/Carter Road Exit 12 Interchange in Owensboro starting Friday evening, June 5, 2015.

The US 60 eastbound ramps to and from Carter Road will close promptly at 8:00 p.m., CDT, on Friday.  The eastbound ramps will reopen to traffic by 6:00 a.m., on Monday, June 8th.  However, the contractor is optimistic the ramps can reopen to traffic sometime earlier in the weekend, weather permitting.  The contractor and KYTC personnel will attempt to provide timely notice when traffic flow resumes on these ramps.

Motorists should take note that due to this ramp closure and the closure of US 60 eastbound ramps at the KY 81/ West Parrish Avenue Interchange, and US 431/Frederica Street Exit 14 Interchange, eastbound traffic in the US 60 Work Zone will have no exit opportunities between the US 60 Exit 10 Interchange with the Audubon Parkway and the US 231 Exit 16 Interchange.

This closure of eastbound entry and exit ramps at the US 60 Exit 12 Interchange for KY 2698/Carter Road is part of ongoing reconstruction along U.S. 60/The Wendell Ford Expressway at Owensboro from mile point 10.179 at the KY 331/Bon Harbor Hills Road intersection extending eastward to mile point 15.50 near the Horse Fork Creek Bridge, a distance of 5.32 miles.

During Phase I of the project, the contractor is working along the eastbound lanes of U.S. 60 with 2-way traffic running on the westbound lanes.  The contractor expects the reconstructed eastbound lanes to be ready for traffic sometime around July 4th and anticipates shifting traffic sometime near that date.

Due to traffic flow restrictions through the U.S. 60 work zone, motorists are asked to consider taking an alternate route to help reduce traffic congestion.  As a reminder, this work zone has a strictly enforced 45 mile per hour speed limit with an enhanced enforcement presence and double fines for speeding.

About 29,000 vehicles normally travel this section of U.S. 60/The Wendell Ford Expressway at Owensboro in an average day.

Yager Materials of Owensboro is the prime contractor on this $17,756,397 highway improvement project.  Due to heavy rain this spring and other factors, the U.S. 60 rehab project at Owensboro now has an estimated completion date of November 15, 2015.
