Gretchen Wilson’s First Time on the Radio Story Is Better Than Anyone Else’s [Exclusive]
Every single country artist that has broken through and gotten one of their songs on the radio has some sort of story of their first time hearing their song on the radio.
Gretchen Wilson’s First Time on the Radio Story Is Better Than Anyone Else’s
It's been 20 years since Gretchen Wilson first heard her song, "Redneck Woman," on the radio, and boy, does she have an untold story about that fateful day.
Wilson stopped by the Taste of Country Nights studio to chat it up with Evan Paul on Taste of Country Nights On Demand. She was asked if she remembers the first time she heard "Redneck Woman" on the radio, and wow, does she ever!
The Grammy Award-winning artist said, "I was still living in a rental house, and they had repossessed my vehicle that morning. The guy was nice enough to ... because you don't get no money 'til you're out there touring, so, the song comes out and you're still sitting there penniless."
Wilson gave a belly chuckle at that last line, as if she were saying, isn't that ironic?
The "Redneck Woman" singer continued, "So the car, it was a little red Rodeo, and it was repossessed, and the guy was nice enough ... he took it at 4AM, and he knocked on the door because there was a child seat in the back. He didn't want to take off with my car seat."
The story started to intensify. Wilson continued,
So he let me get the car seat out, wasn't that nice of him? When I started the car, as he was getting ready to hook it up, 'Redneck Woman' was playing on the radio.
"That's the first time I heard it on the radio, when my car was being repossessed and I was getting the child seat out of the back."

Wilson said she then called her brother, who lives in Illinois, and he told her music was a pipe dream and it would never happen, and to go get a real job.
Now, that is the best story we have ever heard of an artist hearing their song on the radio for the first time!
Of course, Wilson proved everyone wrong with "Redneck Woman" ... the song went on to reach No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart.
Evan Paul is the host of Taste of Country Nights, a syndicated radio show heard on more than 130 country radio stations nationwide, every night from 7PM to midnight. He plays the best new country music and interviews today's top stars, like Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Dan + Shay, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, Chris Stapleton, Lady A, + more!
