We have officially entered the "ber" months! That means falling leaves, pumpkin spice everything, and shorter days. It also means the clocks will soon go back too, but when, and when is the first official day of fall, anyway?

When Does Fall Begin in Indiana 2025

The first day of fall, also known as the autumnal equinox, is an annual event that occurs when the hours of the day and the hours of the night are nearly equal. This year, the autumnal equinox lands on Monday, September 22, 2025, and more specifically, it occurs around 1:19 pm CDT. This will mark the first official day of fall!

Equinoxes occur twice a year, with daylight and darkness being about the same length in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. This phenomenon's name comes from the Latin words "aequus" (equal) and "nox" (night). -Live Science

When Clocks Change for Daylight Saving Time

But what about the clocks? When do they change? Clocks don’t magically shift when pumpkins start showing up. In Indiana, we still honor Daylight Saving Time and return to Standard Time by “falling back” one hour later every fall. This year, on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2:00 am local time, the clocks will roll back to 1 am, giving us an extra hour of sleep.

Why We Change the Clocks Twice a Year

The general idea is that this allows us all to use natural daylight better: moving the clocks forward 1 hour in the spring grants us more daylight during summer evenings, while moving clocks back 1 hour in the fall grants us more daylight during winter mornings.- Farmers Almanac

Indiana Time Zones and Daylight Saving Time

All of Indiana has followed Daylight Saving Time since 2006. However, we’re still split between the Eastern and Central time zones depending on where you live in the state.

Basically, until November 2, we live in that awkward gap of shorter light and longer to-do lists. But once clocks fall back, mornings literally get brighter, and your sleepy brain can rejoice with that bonus hour. So grab your pumpkin spice and get ready because it's going to be fall, ya'll.
