Spencer County, Indiana, is gearing up for the upcoming peak season with additions and enhancements for their tourism businesses in 2013.

Melissa Brockman, executive director of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau, tells us

Santa Claus – Indiana – on Travel Channel Tonight

The Travel Channel will feature the town of Santa Claus, Indiana, on its hour-long “Best of the Road” special tonight. Santa Claus is known as one of the top “Most Fun Small Towns” chosen to compete in last month’s “Best of the Road Rally” sponsored by USA Today and Rand McNally. A Best of the Road Rally team visited Santa Claus for two days in late June and enthusiastically experienced the fun at Santa’s Stables, Santa Claus Museum, Santa Claus Christmas Store, Santa’s Candy Castle, Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort, and Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari.

The Santa Claus, Indiana, Post Office has selected the 2011
special “picture postmark” for this Christmas season. The post office is
offering the “picture postmark” to cancel the postage stamps on holiday mail in December again this year.

I wrote earlier this week about the history of Holiday World, today marks the theme parks 65th Anniversary and also marks another piece of history. The "Mammoth" The World's Longest Water Coaster will open next May at Holiday World Splashin' Safari costing a whopping 9 million dollars to build! It's the largest single-ride investment in Holiday World's history its so big their calling it "Mammoth"

This weekend I was watching a documentary about Santa Claus Land/Holiday World. I had no idea it first opened 65 years ago in 1946, The world's 1st theme park (pre-dating Disneyland by 18 years). I remember when I was a kid Splashin' Safari didn't even exist at Holiday World, Splashin' Safari came along in 1993.
