10,000 Cranes for Japan, an initiative of Owensboro's Kay Coomes. She visited the WBKR Waking Crew Show this morning and shared with us her vision of help for Japan.

You have seen the images coming from Japan’s earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. It is heartbreaking. Many of you already know, but my mother was Japanese. This disaster has touched me in a deep and profound way and I feel compelled to do something. I need your help; will you please join my endeavor?

The Japanese crane legend is the inspiration for my project. My goal is to have 10,000 people make one origami crane each and attached a one dollar bill to it. One-hundred percent of the money will go to the American Red Cross for their international effort for the Japanese earthquake/tsunami victims. The remaining cranes will then be strung together representing a thread of hope for these victims. And, I will find a way to get our 10,000 cranes to a community in Japan so that the Japanese people will see, they are not alone, people all over the world care and are praying for them.

Understand, your crane's looks do not count, only the effort. Attach the dollar (use tape, staples, etc.) and send to the either one of addresses below. If you want to make more, then God bless your generosity. Please send this email out to all you know and ask them to do the same. Also, print the attached flyer and post it anywhere you can. The more people we reach the greater chance of obtaining 10,000 dollars and cranes.

I realize there may be some who want to just give money and not make a crane and that is fine because I am hoping I will have some that will want to have origami crane parties and may not have a dollar for each one. You see that is the beauty of it, I believe it will all come together. I will take whatever you want to give and I will make sure I have a crane for each dollar. Just to make it go faster and easier, I do have a small request, if you send more than one crane, then please go ahead and string them together and then I will just add them to the existing string.
