A couple of days ago, I was scrolling through Facebook and saw a question posed to the History of Owensboro, KY page.  Isaac McDaniel asked, "Did Johnny Depp go to school in Owensboro?"  And, well, as you can expect, the answers were all over the place.

Now, I'll admit.  When I saw Isaac's question on social media, I immediately thought to myself, "Uh, no!"  But, then it occurred to me that I don't really know the answer.  I had always heard that Johnny was born here, but left at a very early age.  But, that's just what I know from hearsay and stories that were told to me by people who may or may not know the truth.

The answers to Isaac's question suggest that the Johnny Depp folklore in this town runs deep and wild.

Gene Brown commented "He was born here, but moved away around age 5."

Darriana Nard claimed, "He went to Apollo with my aunt."

Josh White saw that comment and offered a counter argument, "It's very well documented that he dropped out of high school in Florida as a teenager."

Those are just a few of the responses Isaac's question elicited.  After reading through the thread, I still don't know the answer.

Here's what we do know.  Newspaper clippings and birth announcements seemingly confirm that Johnny Depp was indeed born at Mercy Hospital on June 9th, 1963.  But that's about where the information about his early days in the 'Boro stop.

So, what do you think?  What have YOU heard?  Did Johnny Depp ever go to school in Owensboro?
