The Legacy of Duncan Hines

Sure, his name is on the box of many homemade sweet treats but did you know this man's story goes far beyond cake and brownie mixes? Duncan Hines was a bit of a pioneer of his trade, one of the first traveling food critics that created food ratings for restaurants.

Hines got his start, not in the culinary industry, but in a traveling salesman role based out of Chicago, Illinois. During his time on the road as a traveling printer salesman, Hines found many splendid eateries along his routes. In 1935, chain restaurants were few and far between, unlike life as we know it now. The American highway system didn't exist either. In this case, many travelers, including Duncan Hines relied on small and locally owned dives to grab a hearty meal. Hines, and his wife, Florence set forth to create a list for their friends of restaurants they recommended to pull over for, all over the country.

Duncan Hines had several books published, including Adventures of Good Eating and The Duncan Hines Dessert Book. Duncan Hines attended class at Bowling Green Business University which would later merge into Western Kentucky University.

Hines is buried in the family plot at Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green.
