Here’s How to Welcome the Antique Cars of The Great Race to Owensboro
It's going to be a really fun evening in downtown Owensboro. As you may have heard, The Great Race is rolling into town tonight. 120 of "the world's finest antique automobiles" are competing in The Great Race and Owensboro is an overnight pit stop on this year's course. To be eligible, cars must have been built in 1974 or earlier.
Naturally, we plan to welcome the participants to town in style! If you'd like to come down and cheer on the cars and welcome the drivers to town, you're asked to line up along Veterans Boulevard by 4:45pm. The first car is expected to roll onto Veterans Boulevard at that time and be followed by the other cars in one minute intervals.
In addition to lots of antique cars, there's going to be a festival atmosphere tonight. There will be food vendors and bars by the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum and a free concert from 5pm to 9pm on the Museum's outdoor stage.
The race is expected to bring over 500 people to town. Dave Kirk, from Visit Owensboro, says we're expecting folks from nearby states to show up for the chance to get a glimpse at the participating classics.
Dave joined us on the show today to talk more about tonight's festivities downtown.
The Great Race covers over 2,300 miles in nine days. The race got underway Saturday in front of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. It will finish this Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina.
The event is not a speed race. The participating vehicles, each with a driver and a navigator, are given precise instructions each day. Those instructions detail every move of the course down to the second. There are secret checkpoints along the way and teams are penalized for time violations. Basically, at the finish line, the lowest scoring team wins The Great Race!
