How Many Bald People Are There in Kentucky and Indiana?

National Bald Is Beautiful Day is celebrated each September 13th here in the U.S. The 'national day' of recognition is the brainchild of John Capps, who the founded the Bald Headed Men's Convention over 50 years ago. For many people, bald truly is beautiful. For others, they don't gracefully accept the fact that they're losing their hair. I'll admit it.  I am 51-years-old and I feel like mine is thinning by the day.  But I look around and can clearly see that I am not alone.

I was curious to see if there were stats by state. I live in Owensboro, Kentucky and host a radio show that serves portions of five states, but super-serves much of western Kentucky and southern Indiana. I decided to find out just how many bald guys there are in each.

While I couldn't get an accurate count, I was able to locate some interesting statistics about hair loss and, specifically, baldness. It's actually not uncommon at all, so I suppose John Capps was wise to create a National Bald Is Beautiful Day. There is strength and beauty in numbers.

According to statistics, one in four men will start balding by the age of 21. That's not a typo either. 25% of men start balding by the age of TWENTY-ONE!! That's a pretty remarkable (and a bit unexpected) figure. But get this!  By the time men approach the age of 40, it gets even more common. 66% of men will experience hair loss by the age of 35. By the age of 50 (I feel triggered), 85% of men will have lost some or all of their hair.

Ladies, don't think you're an exception. Nearly 40% of women notice hair loss by the age of 40.

So, before we get to the stats here in Kentucky and Indiana, how exactly does the United States stack up with the rest of the bald world?  There's good news. At least we're not the Czech Republic.  According to World Population Review, the Czech Republic is home to the highest percentage of men losing their hair. That figure stands at about 43%.  Right behind them?  Spain. Behind Spain? Germany. Baldness/hair loss in the United States currently stands at 39%.

Now, how do Kentucky and Indiana fare? Well, it's kind of a mixed bag. GoodRx Health recently conducted a survey called The Baldest States: Where Are Men Treating Hair Loss? They utilized internal research containing the number of prescriptions filled for finasteride (Propecia).

According to GoodRx, Kentucky's prescriptions are ABOVE the national average. Indiana's are LOWER than the national average. Not sure why our friends in the Hoosier State are holding onto their hair longer than us Kentuckians, but it's all good. According to the data, most of us are going to lose either some or all of our hair and that hair loss will, for most, start sooner rather than later. At 51, I'm just trying to hold onto what I've got. If what you had is already gone, just remember!
